In a recent episode of my podcast, Grow Your Brand With Amanda, Shauna Blair and I had a conversation packed with fascinating reflections, real-world experience, and actionable insights. Several key themes emerged around growing a business and personal brand in today’s fast-moving world. From navigating the most unpredictable challenges to leveraging visibility, this discussion underscored the importance of showing up, even when it feels uncomfortable, and the powerful ripple effects of doing so.

1. Visibility Isn’t Optional, It’s Foundational

A standout message was the importance of being visible in business, which many business owners shy away from. Without consistent visibility, even the most innovative products or services can remain hidden. Visibility isn’t just about showing up on social media; it’s about connecting personally, telling your story, and being present where your customers already are.

Many business owners hold back, doubting that their story matters. But personal storytelling creates emotional connection, and in many cases, it’s the difference between a forgettable brand and one that resonates.

Visibility drives connection, and connection drives conversion. Make storytelling part of your strategy, not an afterthought.

2. Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Another recurring theme was that success often comes just beyond the edge of your comfort zone. Whether it’s public speaking, attending networking events, or doing a live interview shortly after a major life event, these moments of bravery truly build long-term momentum.

Yes, it can feel daunting. But business growth and personal development are often sparked by stepping into those moments before you feel “ready.” Ask yourself this – will you ever truly feel ready?

Don’t wait until you feel 100% prepared. Do the thing, then grow into it. Take a few risks!

3. Resilience Through Uncertainty

The realities of building a brand in the face of global disruptions like Brexit and COVID-19 were discussed with brutal honesty and lived experience. Many businesses were forced to pivot, pause, or shut down entirely. Yet out of those challenges emerged new ideas, fresh brands, and even mentoring pathways for others in the same industry.

Resilience isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about moving forward when plans change and using your experience to support others. Be ready to adapt.

4. Goal Setting: Reframing Pressure Into Progress

High-achieving entrepreneurs often fall into the trap of setting overly ambitious goals and then feeling discouraged when they aren’t reached fast enough. This can create unnecessary anxiety and a sense of failure, even when genuine progress is being made.

Reframing goal setting as intentional, progressive action rather than perfection-driven achievement can reduce overwhelm and increase motivation.

Set goals that stretch you, not stress you. Focus on direction over deadlines and don’t compete with yourself!

5. Public Relations: The Power of a Strategic Spotlight

One of the most practical insights shared was around the power of PR. A single press release, crafted with authenticity and intention, led to media coverage valued at hundreds of thousands of pounds. This kind of exposure doesn’t just generate buzz, really it opens doors, builds brand credibility, and can lead to substantial business growth.

Don’t underestimate the value of earned media. A strong story, well told, can outperform even the best-paid ads.

6. Balancing Life and Business: Yes, It’s Messy, Do It Anyway

The discussion also highlighted the realities of juggling personal life with professional opportunities, including big career moments that come at inconvenient times. Whether it’s balancing parenting with PR or saying yes to media interviews despite fatigue, it’s about choosing long-term impact over short-term ease.

Life won’t wait for the perfect moment. Take the opportunity and trust you’ll figure out the rest.

7. The Value of Networking (And Knowing When to Say No)

Networking was emphasised as essential to visibility but it needs to be the right kind of networking. Rather than exhausting every available option, a better approach is to test different events and platforms, then double down on those that feel aligned and energizing.

Be selective with your visibility. You don’t need to be everywhere, just consistently in the right places and mix it up from time to time.
